Child Safety Online: Utah’s $5M Penalty Shows the Stakes for Families Everywhere

The fight to protect children from online exploitation is gaining momentum across the nation. Utah is the latest state to take bold action against pornography giant Pornhub, holding its parent company, Aylo, accountable for failing to block child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and nonconsensual content (NCM) from its platforms.

In partnership with the Federal Trade Commission, Utah announced a settlement requiring Pornhub’s operators to pay a $5 million penalty and to establish safeguards that prevent CSAM and NCM from appearing on its sites.  Read the full article here.

“Utah’s action is a reminder that states have the power to demand accountability,” said Abby Corrigan, CEO of Colorado Faith Alliance. “At CFA, we believe protecting children requires both prevention and policy. When companies profit from unsafe digital environments, children are the ones who pay the price. Colorado must learn from Utah’s example and be ready to act so that our kids are protected both online and in person.”

Why This Matters for Colorado

Although the case unfolded in Utah, it sends a powerful message for Colorado and beyond: states can and must act to hold online platforms accountable. Colorado currently ranks among the top states for reported trafficking activity, underscoring the urgency of ensuring children are not exploited online.

By watching what’s happening in Utah, Coloradans can see how legislative and legal tools may be used here to demand greater accountability from companies profiting off unsafe digital environments.

Building Momentum Nationwide

Utah is not alone. Across the country, states are introducing measures aimed at:

  • Age verification for adult content sites
  • Stricter protections on how children’s data is collected and shared
  • Accountability for social media design features that put kids at risk

Each step adds to a growing national movement to protect children in the digital age.
