Law Enforcement Update
Colorado now mandating training for new law enforcement recruits responding to human trafficking.
For the first time in Colorado history, every new law enforcement recruit is required to train in identifying, investigating and responding to human trafficking.
Why it matters:
It’s vital that every police officer receives trafficking training so they can recognize victims quickly, respond in a trauma-informed way, and ensure those being exploited are protected rather than criminalized.
Local Arrests
A Colorado man has pled guilty to the sextortion of at least 68 children in “nearly every state” through social media and sex trafficking at least five of those children, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO).
Aurora police looking for additional sex crime victims after arrest of retired airline pilot.
In a recent operation, Aurora police arrested two men, including a 68-year-old airline pilot, in a child predator sting. The operation was part of ongoing efforts to combat online child exploitation.
Douglas County Arrests:
Michael Palestino of Castle Pines and Gianna Worley of Centennial were arrested on multiple felony counts related to child sex crimes. The arrests were part of a broader investigation into child exploitation in the region.
Lone Tree man sentenced for possessing, distributing over 200k images of child pornography.
A Lone Tree man will serve four years in prison after pleading guilty to possessing and distributing over 200,000 images of child pornography, the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s (DA) Office said.
Why it matters:
Arrests like these show the importance of prevention education — predators often reach kids through gaming apps, chat rooms, and social media.
